Messenger is where a lot of life ends up: family updates, long-distance conversations, plans that turned into memories, and years of everyday messages you never meant to lose. If you want to export a Messenger conversation, you usually just want the chat itself in a file you can actually use.

Why export Messenger conversations?

Messenger threads often end up holding the ongoing record of a relationship without anyone deciding that in advance. Birth announcements, long-distance check-ins, family logistics, inside jokes, and years of ordinary messages all live in the same place. Exporting gives you a copy you can keep and come back to.

What Messenger export file you need

Facebook gives you a lot of account data, but you do not need most of it for this. You just want the message export that keeps the conversation clean and easy to upload.

If your account has the direct Messenger download page, use that. If not, go through Meta Accounts Center and request only Messages in JSON.

• Prefer a .zip download that contains only messages.
• Prefer JSON over HTML.
• Keep the export on your computer so the upload step is easy.

Step-by-step guide

This is the part that trips people up. Some accounts get a direct Messenger export option, while others have to go through Accounts Center. Both work as long as you request only messages and keep the file in JSON.

1. Log into messenger.com on your computer.
2. Check whether your account has the direct Download your data page.
3. If it does, download the file directly there.
4. If it does not, go through Accounts Center and request only Messages in JSON.
5. Download the finished .zip file when it is ready.
6. Upload the export to My Forever Books and continue designing your book.
