Messenger is where a lot of life ends up: family updates, long-distance conversations, plans that turned into memories, and years of everyday messages you never meant to lose. If you want to export a Messenger conversation, you usually just want the chat itself in a file you can actually use.
If the export is already sitting on your computer, you can start your Messenger book now. If not, the steps below walk you through the download first.

Why export Messenger conversations?
Messenger threads often end up holding the ongoing record of a relationship without anyone deciding that in advance. Birth announcements, long-distance check-ins, family logistics, inside jokes, and years of ordinary messages all live in the same place. Exporting gives you a copy you can keep and come back to.
- Messenger often holds years of family and friend history that never gets backed up intentionally.
- Exporting gives you a copy outside one account and one device.
- A printed book makes a long conversation feel readable again.
What Messenger export file you need
Facebook gives you a lot of account data, but you do not need most of it for this. You just want the message export that keeps the conversation clean and easy to upload.
If your account has the direct Messenger download page, use that. If not, go through Meta Accounts Center and request only Messages in JSON.
- Prefer a .zip download that contains only messages.
- Prefer JSON over HTML.
- Keep the export on your computer so the upload step is easy.
Step-by-step guide
This is the part that trips people up. Some accounts get a direct Messenger export option, while others have to go through Accounts Center. Both work as long as you request only messages and keep the file in JSON.
- Log into messenger.com on your computer.
- Check whether your account has the direct Download your data page.
- If it does, download the file directly there.
- If it does not, go through Accounts Center and request only Messages in JSON.
- Download the finished .zip file when it is ready.
- Upload the export to My Forever Books and continue designing your book.
Messenger export usually starts on a computer, but after upload both the book editor and cover editor fully work on mobile too.
And if the conversation runs for years, that is fine. There are no file limits, and we split long conversations into neat volumes labeled by the message dates so everything stays organized.
Tips for a better Messenger book
In most cases, start with the full conversation. Once you can see it in the editor, it gets much easier to decide what belongs in the finished book.
- You can upload a full long-running conversation without trimming it first.
- There are no file limits, and if the export runs long, we split it into neat volumes.
- Each project is labeled by the message dates so long chats stay organized.
